Job Description

Job Summary:

Inspects, assembles and evaluates all surgical instruments and instrument sets to ensure proper sterilization, completeness of set, and to determine need for repair/replacement.


  • Performs decontamination of soiled instruments, sterilization containers and equipment according to established protocols.

  • Inspects instruments, equipment and containers to assure cleanliness and proper functioning.

  • Corrects instrument sets according to current standards and established count sheets and/or instrument tracking systems.

  • Maintains proper levels of inventory to ensure availability for case carts.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of microbiological control and documentation. Performs all necessary preparation for the sterilization process. All other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization systems used in accordance with established Infection Control protocols and AAMI standards.

  • Inspects instruments, equipment & containers to assure cleanliness and proper function.

  • Required Credential(s):

  • Certified Central Service Tech specializing in Sterile Processing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. Accepted certifications are certified registered central service technician credentialed by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management or certified sterile processing and distribution technician credentialed by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc.


  • HS or Equivalent

  • High School diploma or GED required

Work Experience:

  • One to two years of Central Sterile experience or completion of a Central Sterile Processing Program preferred.
