Job Description

Job Summary:

The Lab Assistant performs technical and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing and transporting specimens.

  • Maintains equipment and adequate stock of supplies.

  • Maintains work area in a safe, aseptic and organized manner.

  • Performs clerical duties which may include but are not limited to answering phones, data entry, and filing.

  • May be responsible for collecting blood specimens for use by clinicians and/or Medical Technologists for clinical analyses, evaluations, and/or diagnostic purposes.

  • At some locations, may initiate registration and test ordering in lab computer systems, including obtaining diagnoses from providers and checking appropriate medical necessity.

  • At some locations, may collect and enter all necessary demographic and insurance information from patients or responsible parties.

  • At some locations, may be responsible for following up with physician office for additional information as needed.

  • At some locations, may be responsible for daily, weekly and monthly system maintenance of laboratory equipment and technical instrumentation and for performing limited Point of Care testing.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Licenses/Certifications/Registration:

  • Preferred Credential(s):

  • Certification specializing in Phlebotomy.

Education:

  • HS or Equivalent

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Work Experience:

  • Prior Laboratory experience preferred. Medical Terminology preferred. Phlebotomy and specimen collection/handling experience strongly preferred. Computer and customer service skills preferred.
